Maple Carmelized Onions

As anyone who follows my instagram (@rusticandrose) would know, we eat a lot of charcuterie around here. I LOVE all types of cheese and cured meats. Recently we discovered the Wildly Delicious Carmelized Onions w/ Maple Confit. It pairs so well with a good cheese or meat tray! BUT at $6.99 a jar we were going broke considering how much we eat (not really, but you get the point…).

So over the last few months I have been working at perfecting my very own maple-flavoured carmelized onions.

Check out the recipe below…


4 cups onions

2 tbsp brown sugar

3 tbsp maple syrup

2 tbsp white wine vinegar

2 tbsp sunflower oil

Pinch of salt

Pinch of pepper


Heat the oil. Add onions, salt and pepper. Let brown. 

Add brown sugar and maple syrup. Turn to low/medium heat. Cook for 15 mins. 

Add white wine vinegar. Let cook on med/low until jammy and golden (approx. 30 mins.)

When they are done, let them cool and enjoy. OR if you are like me and like to make a ton and jar them, then you can put them into sterilized jars and seal them for later use! 

The longer these sit in the jar, the tastier they get, so while they are ready as soon as you take them off the heat, if you leave them for a month or so they get even tastier!
